Rookie Wayne Simien had chance to give the Heat a lead but split a pair of free throws with 37 second remaining.

After a timeout, Lue misfired on a shot from the arc eight seconds later but Zaza Pachulia pulled down the rebound to the stage for Lue's winning basket.

"I was talking to Shaquille (O'Neal) and Antoine (Walker)," said Lue, who made 5-of-12 shots. "They were giving me stuff before Joe (Johnson) penetrated and kicked it to me. I just had a couple of words to say."

"All year we've been putting ourselves in a position to win basketball games," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "Tonight was another nail-biter, but we made the play. Lue hits the big shot down the stretch."

Dorell Wright, who scored 19 points, missed a shot as time expired for the Heat (52-29), who had an 11-game winning streak against the Hawks stopped.

Pachulia scored 18 points and Al Harrington added 17 for Atlanta, which shot 44 percent (37-of-83) from the field and had six players in double figures.

The Hawks (26-55) doubled their win total from a season ago.

"That was big to have doubled our total from last year," Lue said. "We definitely wanted to go out getting a win at home."

Jason Kapono scored 16 points off the bench and Walker added 14 for the Heat (26-55), who shot 50 percent (42-of-84) and played without O'Neal and Dwyane Wade.

"We're very deep," said Walker, who added five assists. "All 15 guys on this team can come and play anybody."
